Put all the moving parts on one page. The timeline view visualizes all work assigned to your team by date (including work without firm dates). Use this chart to monitor progress, adjust details, and maintain strategic alignment around critical dependencies. From the timeline, you can mitigate risks before they happen, and complete projects on time with confidence.
To access the timeline view, navigate to Plans -> Timeline.
Click any of the following links to skip ahead:
Customize the timeline view
You can customize the timeline view to focus on critical elements of your plans.
From the top of the timeline view:
-
Use the Customize view ⚙️ dropdown to customize your timeline view layout.
Customize view: Choose whether to display weekends, assignees, progress , or the progress chart beside each release.
Color bars by: Choose whether you want to color the timeline bars by Status, Assignee, record Type, or activity type.
Manage dependencies: Choose whether to show or hide the connector lines that indicate dependencies. Note: You can also configure connector lines for individual records by clicking the More options menu beside the record name.
Use the filters on top to show or hide different activities, parking lots, or sprints. If you hover over the filters bar, you can click the Add filters + icon to add basic filters , or click the Edit filters icon to add advanced filters .
The Parking lots filter will also adjust Aha! Roadmaps releases. Use this filter to visualize your timeline by product release!
From the right side of the timeline chart:
Use the Timeline menu to focus your timeline chart on the right date range. Choose from Three-month, Six-month, or One-year views, or choose to Fit all of your data into one view. You can also choose to select a Custom date range. Your timeline chart defaults to Fit when you first load it, and if you change any data, refreshing the page will zoom to Fit your data again.
Use the Zoom in and Zoom out magnifiers to further customize your timeline.
Note:
When you save and share a timeline chart externally, the date range in the view you share will be what you selected in the Timeline menu. This lets you control what part of your roadmap you want people to see — you can focus their attention without sharing your entire plan.
When you save and share a timeline chart with other Aha! users in your account, they will initially see the date range you selected. They can then use the Timeline menu to adjust the view.
From the left side of the timeline chart:
-
Click the More options button beside any activity to:
Edit record details. This will open up that record's drawer view.
Remove from Gantt. This will hide the element from the timeline view without removing it from your team. You can click the + icon and Add existing activity to show the hidden activity again.
Hide connector lines. This will hide (or show) the lines that indicate dependencies.
From the timeline chart itself:
Click and drag vertically to re-sort the order of any activity.
Click and drag horizontally to adjust the dates of any activity on the timeline.
Adjust record details
Epics, activities, and requirements represent the work that you will complete on your timeline. By default, the timeline shows all records that have been assigned to your team.
You can adjust the dates of records by editing them — opening up the record and changing its Date range — or by clicking and dragging them around the timeline view to the dates you prefer. You can also click and drag one end of an activity to edit just its Start or just its End date. Any time you adjust the dates of a record by moving them on the timeline, you will see a tooltip showing the exact date(s) you are moving them to.
Start and End dates are not associated with a timezone.
View records without dates
All activities will be visible on the timeline by default — even if they do not have Start and End dates. This way, you can organize them in the context of the rest of the timeline before assigning them dates. Activities without dates will appear at the start of a timeline but with hazy bar borders.
Assign dates to an activity by clicking and dragging its bar on the timeline view or by clicking on it to open it, then editing the Date range fields on the Overview tab. You can also hide the activity from the timeline by clicking the More options button beside the activity's name and selecting Remove from Gantt. Click the blue (+) between rows of the timeline and click Add -> Existing records to add back hidden records.
Click on an activity from the timeline to open its drawer view. From the drawer, you can also click the Details button to go to the details view for that record. The details page displays one record at a time, allowing you to see every detail at a glance. There is also a collapsible sidebar on the left that includes a list of all the same record types within the same source (sprint, parking lot, backlog, etc.).
Create record dependencies
Some work cannot start before another activity has been completed. You can visualize these dependencies on the timeline view for transparency, and to highlight critical pathways that help inform prioritization and capacity discussions.
To create a dependency on your timeline, hover over a record, then click and drag the link icon from one bar to another.
If the dependent record is in the future, the dependency line will be grey. If the record is in the past — or if the dates slip on the record it depends on — the dependency line will turn red.
Note: Remember, child and parent records do not have to share the same start and due dates on a timeline view.
Share your timeline
Plans are made to be shared. Once you have customized your timeline, it is time to share it with the people it affects. Tie the work to people by opening records and assigning them, creating to-dos, adding watchers, or @mentioning Aha! users in comments. You can share your timeline with other stakeholders by selecting one of the export options through the Share button on the top-right of the page.
To invite people outside of your Aha! account to view your timeline, navigate to Share -> Web -> Manage webpage.
To schedule recurring email delivery of your timeliune, navigate to Share -> Email schedule.
To add a timeline view to a whiteboard as records, access the Export menu and select Add to whiteboard as records.
For a static version of your timeline, export it to PNG image or PDF document.
