Roadmap planning scenarios

What-ifs should happen before your roadmap gets going. Mitigate risks and highlight opportunities by putting your Gantt chart or strategic roadmap into planning mode, where you can make and review changes without changing any of the underlying data.

If you would like to plan your team's capacity against your strategic roadmap, consider scenario-based capacity planning (Enterprise+)

Create a planning scenario

You can create a planning scenario from the releases Gantt chart, epics Gantt chart, or strategy roadmap (which visualizes your plan by initiatives). To do this:

  • Create a Gantt chart or strategy roadmap. Customize it with filters to include the records and set the date range that will populate your planning scenario.

  • Click the Views dropdown and select Create scenario. If a scenario has already been created from this view, click Edit scenario to return to it.

Once you are in a planning scenario, you can still update the view visually, from the Customize view dropdown or the Date range selection, but you will not be able to adjust filters or add new records to the scenario.

Explore potential updates

In a planning scenario, you can add or remove existing records, adjust timing, or update dependencies. None of these changes affect your underlying data until you choose to apply them — unless you click on a record to open its drawer. Changes made to a record's details from a drawer view will be reflected immediately. Changes made to the view will queue for you to review.

If you adjust a parent record, like changing a release's Start and End dates, you will see a separate change for each individual child record.

Share the scenario view

If you want to collaborate on possible changes to your roadmap, share the URL with stakeholders. Any user with contributor permissions to the workspace containing your view will be able to make potential updates of their own for review. Viewers and reviewers will be able to see the planning scenario but not suggest changes of their own.

Review proposed changes

To see the changes that you and your collaborators have made, click the Review changes button in the lower right corner of your planning scenario. The Review changes screen will load. From here:

  • Review each separate change on its own line.

  • Sort the list of changes by Record name, Record type, or User who made the change.

  • Check or uncheck the box by a particular change to include or exclude it.

  • Choose to Discard or Confirm the selected changes.

    • If you discarded changes, you will be returned to the planning scenario. To exit the planning scenario and return to the roadmap view, click Exit scenario.

    • If you confirmed changes, the data will be updated and you will be returned to the roadmap view. To return to the planning scenario, click Views -> Edit scenario.
