You need a clear way to connect customer feedback to the work the team plans to deliver. Promoting ideas provides that link, keeping feedback connected to roadmap records and making progress easier to understand.
Use this article to understand what promotion does, how to review copied idea details before saving a new record, when to use Elle to draft a feature description, where to find promoted idea details, and how to decide when to promote or link an idea.

Overview
Promoting an idea connects an idea to the roadmap work your team plans to deliver. You can promote an idea to an initiative, epic, release, feature, or requirement. The promoted record stays connected to the original idea, so your team can review the feedback behind the work and follow progress through delivery.
When you promote an idea to a new feature, you can also use Elle, the AI assistant, in the description field to draft the feature before you save it.
Promotion is useful when you want one source of truth between incoming feedback and planned work. It helps product managers trace how a request moves from idea to roadmap item, gives stakeholders more visibility into what is happening next, and can update idea status automatically as the promoted record moves through its workflow.
You can promote ideas to records in workspaces where you have permission to create or update records.
How is promotion different from linking?
Promoted ideas stay tied to the new record and update automatically as that record moves through its status workflow.
Linked ideas added from a record's Research tab display related feedback, including votes and, for Aha! Ideas Advanced customers, organizations. They do not update automatically as the record status changes.
Promote an idea
Open the idea in your account and select Promote.
-
A record creation window opens. At the top, select the record type you want to create. Choose from initiative, epic, release, feature, or requirement.
If you promote to a new Requirement, select the feature that the requirement should be added to.
-
Choose whether to create a New record or link to an Existing record. New will be selected by default.
If you choose New, review any values copied from the idea, update them as needed, and complete the required fields on the form.
If you are creating a feature, you can use Elle in the description field to draft the feature description before you save it. This can help you move from a customer idea to a more complete feature record without rewriting the description from scratch.
If you choose Existing, select the record you want to link the idea to.
Select Promote idea.
If your team uses custom instructions with Elle, you can apply them while drafting the description so the new feature follows your team's standard format.
See promoted ideas on roadmap records
Open the promoted record's Research tab to review the idea behind the work.
See the linked idea or ideas.
See votes for each idea.
If you are on the Aha! Ideas Advanced plan, see how many organizations voted on each idea.
On the idea record in your workspace, users in your Aha! account can also see which record or records the idea was promoted to and open them to review details and progress.
How promoted record status affects idea status
Promoting an idea can also update its status automatically. When you promote an idea to another record, the idea moves to the first status in the In progress category. As work continues, status changes on the promoted record can update the linked idea.
This automation applies only to promoted ideas. Ideas linked from a record's Research tab show related feedback, but they do not change status automatically.
When a promoted record reaches a completed state, the linked idea can also move forward. For example, when a feature moves to Shipped, the idea updates to the first status in the Shipped category. Promoted initiatives work a little differently: because initiatives do not have a Shipped category by default, the idea updates to Shipped when the initiative enters a Done status.
These updates depend on your configured workflows. If you customize idea statuses, keep at least one status in the In progress category so promotion can move the idea forward.
Show promotion details in your ideas portal
Portal users can stay informed as work on their feedback moves forward. They are notified when an idea is promoted and again when the promoted record ships. If promotion changes the idea's status, portal users who voted on the idea are updated automatically.
You can also share more context right on the idea in your portal. Add promoted record fields to the Ideas portal — Ideas custom layout so people can see how their feedback connects to planned work.
You can add these promoted record fields:
Promoted record name
Promoted record status
-
Promoted release name
This displays once the idea ships.
-
Promoted release date
This displays once the idea ships.
When you add promoted record fields to the layout, you also get Promoted idea fields settings in your portal settings. Use these settings to choose when promoted data appears:
Only show if the idea is promoted to a workspace in this portal: Default. Promoted data appears only when the promoted record belongs to a workspace linked to that portal.
Show if the idea is promoted to any workspace: Promoted data appears for records in any workspace in your Aha! account.
You can also show these internal idea fields in the portal:

-
Tags
This displays all internal tags on the idea.
