Create and manage rules templates

Aha! Builder

Default rules set a baseline for every application in your account, but not every application needs the same controls. A prototype built for internal testing might allow all authentication methods and skip deployment approval, while an application handling customer data might require SAML authentication and administrator-only deployment. Rules templates let you define named sets of governance rules and assign them to specific applications so each one gets the controls it needs.

When an application is assigned a rules template, the template rules take precedence over the account default rules for that application.

This article discusses functionality that is available to Aha! Builder Team and Scale plans.

Click any of the following links to skip ahead:

Create a rules template

  • Navigate to the Governance tab and click Templates.

  • Click New template in the upper right.

  • Give the template a descriptive name that reflects its purpose — for example, "Production applications" or "Internal prototypes."

The template opens with the same six rule categories as the default rules. All toggles start in the same state as your current default rules.

Configure template rules

Each rules template contains the same five governance controls as the default rules:

  • Limit authentication methods: Toggle individual authentication providers on or off — Password, Aha!, Google, GitHub, Microsoft, and SAML.
Note: SAML SSO authentication is available to Aha! Builder Scale plan customers.

  • Workspace owners can deploy applications: Control whether owners can deploy to production or whether only administrators can.

  • Applications can access the internet: Control whether applications can make outbound network requests.

  • Applications can send emails: Control whether applications can send emails to users.

  • Enable AI usage: Control whether builders can include AI functionality in applications.

Disabling a capability in a template removes it for all users of the assigned applications, even if their role would normally allow it.

Click Save changes to save your updates.

Assign a template to applications

  • Open a rules template from the Rules templates tab.

  • In the Overview section at the top, select the applications that should use this template.

An application can only be assigned to one rules template at a time. If an application is not assigned to any template, it uses the account default rules — shown as "Default" in the Application rules template column on the Applications tab.

Manage rules templates

The Rules templates tab lists all templates in your account. Each row shows the template name, the applications assigned to it, the date the template was created, and the date it was last modified. You can search for templates by name or use filters to narrow the list.

Click the More options menu on any template row to edit or delete a template. Deleting a template removes the assignment from all applications that were using it. Those applications revert to the account default rules.
